FWIW, I use a prepaid Orange SIM when I'm in the UK. Their network is
heavily (only?) 1800MHz, so it's the one most likely to be compatible
with US-sold "triband" GSM mobiles (typically 850MHz, 1800MHz, 1900MHz).
I know there's another primarily 1800MHz operator in the UK but I don't
remember what they're called these days (used to be one2one).
You can get the SIMs on any mobile phone shop, I picked up mine at the
mobile phone/accessory shop (can't remember its name - talk-something?)
on the check-in level of terminal 3 in LHR. You can refill them at gas
stations, supermarkets, corner shops etc.
Works well so far, and together with a discount long-distance account
from these guys:

to get around Orange's ridiculous international rates on prepaid plans,
it works out quite well.
