An N type connector os just a 50 ohm impedance (usually) connector to  
match the 50 ohm transmission line (coax) with no bumps. You can get  
it in 75 ohm too.

BNC == Bayonet N Connector is similar and designed for smaller coax  
(RG-58 sized) and can be used a 2.4GHz.

As others have commented the center pin of the N connector makes a  
rigid mount point. And that evil RG-174 (or similar) has a horrible  
loss at 2.4GHz.
