OSCON

I’m going to be at OSCON next Wednesday and Thursday with the HelixCommunity crew. I haven’t been to Portland for a while, but every time I find myself there, I have a good time. The conference looks action packed, so I expect I’ll be all over the grid. One thing that I can’t miss (hangover or not) is the BOF session where jfarr is going to show off all the fancy goodness you can do using the the Helix open source client. Anyone else who’s interested in set top box hackery should definitely be there!

I’m kind of bummed I’m going to miss the talks by both Rob and Schuyler, but one of the conditions of my trip down is that I’m back on Friday, in my seat and happy. I wonder if they bribed my boss to avoid the heckling.

I still haven’t figured out if I’m hitching a ride or taking the train down, where I’m staying, or what bars I will end up in. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Switching to writebacks

Pollxn was a cool comment system, but I’ve decided to take the leap into the whole trackback vibe that’s going on. For those of you that dont know, this blog is powered by blosxom, and a growing number of plugins.

Talking to the City.

I’ve been invited to speak at the July meeting of the Citizens Telecommunications & Technology Advisory Board. I’ve spoken with a few people involved with CTTAB and the City of Seattle already, so it should be a good time. The talk will of course focus on SeattleWireless, the FreeNetworks movement and just what it takes to get involved. Hopefully we’ll start seeing some city-owned nodes and content on the .swn soon.

HackNight Details

  • Took some updated pics of my node
  • Worked on gir.seattlewireless.net in preparation of the big move.
  • Fiddling with new Kismet OSX support
  • Messed with voice calls on iChat Beta.
    • Works good with the SOCOM headset. Not bad with the built-in mic on the iBook if it’s not too noisy.
    • Haven’t tried video. I have a firewire camcorder, but dont know anyone else with a vidcam that works yet
  • Changed IRQ of wireless card on drinkmore AP to avoid the heavy traffic crashes
  • Checked out Chuck’s Stylistic 500 before it was chown’d
  • had a few pints at the Summit.

Phonecam v.3

I’m now using the phonecam script to publish to 16photos.com, and have made a few formatting changes. I suppose this merits a new version.

Adam is moving

Adam Shand, founder of The Personal Telco Project and chief instigator in the adhoc cockroach eating contest at defcon is moving back to ozone free New Zealand to work for WetaDigital. Will .nz become the new portland, or will he spend all his time looking for electrum?

5 to 7 days….

Today I went to the AT&T store with my friend Jason. I sold him my T68i and he was attempting to purchase a pre-paid sim card for it. The oddest thing happened when he attempted to pay with cash. The clerk told him that cash takes 5 to 7 days to process. Debit or Credit cards would activate his phone immediately, but U.S. Currency is definitely a problem. All was not lost though, to pay with cash, one only has to go to the website, set up an account, print out a custom page with a barcode, and bring it into the store and have them scan it. Of course, the 5 to 7 days still applies

It must be nice to be a carrier.

Peter’s Mt Baldi Update (pictures).

Continuing the Mt. Baldi to Tacoma link thread… Here are some pictures from both sides.

Fry’s comes to Seattle, well… Renton.

Fry’s opens next month…. Damn. This is good news.

Casey’s Mt. Baldi Update

Peter Yorke and I made a trek up to mt. baldi today, along with Scott
Cronk. Mike Pierce was down on the optic fusion building in tacoma with
a 24dBi parabolic for alignment purposes. The weather was awesome on the
mountain, and we have a few pictures. The snow has completely melted,
making vehicle access possible.

We successfully accomplished the following:

  • Moved soekris to waterproof enclosure on top of tower
  • Placed donated RG1000 in enclosure for future use (mt. rainier client
access and eastern washington link test purposes)

  • Placed tacoma facing radio for linking into downtown tacoma, radio configured and online. Aligned antenna with Tacoma test radios.

The tower mounting is very exciting because we were able to eliminate
50-60 feet of LMR-400 in exchange for just using a couple of pigtails.
This cuts our signal losses drastically.

The next steps will be to move the seattle facing antenna up to the tower
on our next trip, and install a permanent facility on the building in
tacoma this next coming week. We also will probably obtain a 24dBi
parabolic for mt. rainier facing as well as eastern washington facing for
link tests. There are also some fun items going into the mt. baldi site.

As soon as a few minor building facility items are addressed in tacoma
(work in progress) we should have network connectivity between
TacomaBaldi very shortly. A client radio is being placed in Tacoma
(TacomaNode) for all those in range for end-user usage.

Its been a long 6 months, but we are slowly making progress on
introducing the first piece of snownet for general SWN usage! Just one
wireless hop (router) to tacoma from seattle. Hopefully more fun hops
soon.

Exciting times ahead! More updates at the meeting - be sure to attend!
