SeattleWireless TV

While I was in the midst of a small work crisis, SeattleWireless TV launched last night. Props to Michael and Peter for putting this together. Maybe our meeting streams will have a bit more polish to them now.

Hack Night Details

  • Re-branded Linksys .asp files
  • Reviewed SeattleWireless TV segment
  • One step further in archive migration
  • Re-Established tunnels for Richard and Casey
  • Monitoring setup for NodeOne Rooftop
  • Formed the SeattleWireless Brick makers union
  • Headed to the Summit Tavern for pints

  • Linksys Tools!

Rob has now written a script to allow you to put your custom firmware on the LinksysWrt54g

    It’s available at http://nocat.net/download/wrtgen

It is a small perl script that generates firmware that the WRT54G will accept.

    Requirements:

  • Perl, and String::CRC32 (from CPAN)
  • mkcramfs, v1.1 (from SourceForge)
  • wget, if you want it to download firmware from Linksys for you

    Features:

  • Auto-download the original firmware from Linksys
  • Extract the original CramFS for your own edification
  • Builds a new CramFS root on the fly, computes the proper header, and
    generates the firmware

It has been released under the GPL

  • Hot Damn…

Chuck is smart. Rob has successfully blasted some custom firmware onto a Linksys WRT54G.

On the agenda for tomorrow’s hack night:

  • Setting up a dev environment
  • Makin binaries…. oooh sweet binaries.

  • Terry will rub your feet.

According to this mail, if you are a graphic designer and spend the hour or two needed to update the NYCWireless site, you can get a free membership as well as a foot massage by Terry Schmidt, founder of nycwireless.

Credit goes to Matt Peterson for the great picture.

    Call for math geeks.

Looks like rob is stumped on the CRC bits. He’s put up a call for help and even mailed linksys. Anyone else out there with a bit of hex foo? Looks like the guys at wirelessnederland forums were the first to figure it out, but their explanation could use a little more translation ;)

BTW, I’ve been offered a shell on a MIPS box (cobalt qube) to compile some binaries once we have this figured out, or (according to the .nl guys), we can do this all on a playstation2. I happen to have one of those… Do I need to modchip it for that? It sure would be interesting to have a custom WAP for $130 with a $150 development platform.

    PocketSOM hits /.

Casey’s PocketSOM is on slashdot, complete with screenshot. As usual, the comments are completely on topic.

    Adam’s Parting Speech to PersonalTelco

Here is the parting speech of Adam Shand, Founder of the Personal Telco Project in Portland Oregon. The recording comes from the June 2003 General Meeting.

    ogg format audio

It’s worth listening to. It’s also worth reading. The transcript is available on the PTP wiki.

    HackNight Details

  • Messed with oxygen8
  • More FOAFing
  • Linksys WRT54g hackery
  • Tested Casey’s Pocket SOM on 3650, see SOM Wizard on your non-phone
  • more work on gir: Richard is converting the seattlewireless mail archives to mbox
  • Review of seattlewireless TV roughs

  • Nokia 3650 owners.

If you’re using your 3650 primarily for pictures (and are using the sdcard), you will want to flush it regularly. It does not handle a full card gracefully. I let mine get to approximately 450 pictures and it would slow to a crawl when saving. After dumping everything to my laptop, it’s back to the normal 1 to 2 second save. I’m glad I didn’t spring for the memory upgrade now.
