HackNight Details

I think everyone was hiding from The Sun today.

  • Daniel Marsh worked on his carputer remotely (it was parked up the street)
  • StartideRising showed up and had some things to say about wiki vandals
  • MatthewWilson (who I haven’t seen in a long while) showed up with his flame-jobbed powerbook and reminded us that NodeEight is not only still running, but also needs some upstream goodness.
  • Cheesesteaks, Beer, Smokes

In my never-ending search to find a replacement for kozmo.com, I came across Restaurants To Go. It’s a restaurant delivery service that also provides some convenience store shopping.

From what I can tell (through whois), they used to be Culinary Couriers, a company that I had used before, but always seemed a little expensive and never had anything that great.

Last night, however, things worked out really well. With just a little time on the website, we had an order for Pepper Cheese Steak sandwiches (and cheese fries) from Philly’s Best, A six pack of redhook, cigarettes, and even a half gallon of milk for our morning coffee.

The site told us that it would take a little over an hour for our order, but in 45 minutes there was a knock at the door. The beer was cold and the sandwiches were piping hot.

As with all post-kozmo finds, there was a minimum order per stop, an overall delivery charge and a slight markup on all items. Oh well, sometimes you have to pay to be this lazy.

    HackNight Details

It must be winter again. Lots of interesting stuff going on. I decided to take some pictures for this update.

  • Re-configuration of Peter Yorke’s 4521.
  • Peter also showed off his SMC media player. Similar to the Prismiq, this sends video and audio to your TV over the network. 802.11g, 802.11b and 802.11a in this little bugger. Neat stuff.
  • We spent some time talking with Glynn Taylor of HotSpotVPN and CAWNet about how his publicly accessible VPN Hosts can protect users, provide anonymity and are generally a good thing.
  • David McDonald talked about reverse triangulation techniques and showed off his cool location demo.
  • Guy with a parrot showed up
  • Startide Rising showed up with his iKlear screen stuff and cleaned my grubby screen.
  • The BitTorrent Discussion.
  • Crispin showed up with a cantenna from his SF garage sale hunting.
  • Jerrit Collord from Linux Fund showed up with some WRV54Gs, and even left one for us to hack on!

These pictures didn’t turn out that great. I’ll try to take some better ones in the daytime.

    New $20

While getting my taco salad today, I noticed something strange. My $20 bill wasn’t the normal green. It was pink-ish and blue-ish with a smattering of little yellow 20s on the back. I was just getting used to the last series too. Luckily, even money has a website.

    HackNight Details

  • Daniel Marsh showed off his car computer
  • Talked with Toby Martin about building a boat based wireless network
  • Cool Phone Toys.

While I was hanging out at the Foo Bar, I got to talk with Brian McConnell for a while, and without touching a computer or fiddling with SMS, he sent me his contact information. His company Trekmail allows anyone with a phone to send a quick voicemail (mp3) through email. It’s a neat service, rather than sending you into voicemail hell, you tell a live operator where the mail is going and the subject line of the message. After that, you simply talk and hit the # key.

I’m not sure if this is something I’ll use all the time, but it’s definitely a cool tool. It certainly wouldn’t take much procmail foo to make this an audblog replacement in addition to sending quick notes.

    Wireless Hack #15

I suppose it’s not ‘breaking news’ or anything, but phonecam.sh is available in real live dead tree!

Go buy a copy of Wireless Hacks. I just got mine, and it’s a damn cool book.

    Back in Seattle

So the Foo Camp was a lot of fun. The talks were interesting, the people were great, and ElectronicJam went really well. Rob has promised mp3s once he gets things transferred from his minidisc. Speaking of transferring files, In my super-tired state, I created a bunch of zero-byte pictures by unplugging my card reader, luckily some made it.

All in all, a good event, but I’m really happy that I wont be sleeping on another cold floor for a long while.

    Electronic Jam

I’m sitting at a table full of laptops and midimans, with Brian on the mixer. Doc Searls has dubbed us the Behlendorftones. I’m not sure what to think about that really, but I’m having a damn fine time. Foo.

    Cool Rendezvous appliances

Last night I listened to Stuart Cheshire talk about new rendezvous enabled appliances. There was a media drive (Via box) streaming to iTunes, a print server, and a cool serial adaptor (it would be much cooler if it was wireless and running SSH). As with all Rendezvous talks, apps were downloaded, and hilarity ensued.
