Tonight we hung out with Michael Lenczner from ile sans fil. He gave us a demo of WiFi Dog, a captive portal designed for community networks. It’s a lot like NoCat, but appears to be more of a finished product with a lot of nice features.
The gateway software (which runs on the LinksysWrt54g and other *NIX devices) captures each user and displays a customized portal (Internet hosted) for the node which displays dynamic content from multiple sources. This allows the node venue (usually a cafe) to add their own pictures, text and RSS feeds. ile sans fil also has space on the splash, which polls the news pages RSS feed and displays the latest network news.
WiFiDog is very reminiscent of the software by Less Networks, but I think I like it better. Maybe it’s because it’s from Canada and not Texas. Maybe it’s because it’s green and not orange, but from the very brief introduction I’ve been given, it just feels cleaner.
