NS4CWN: Summit Keynote

The summit has officially started, and the keynote speakers are now answering questions. We got back from our Arch trip a little late, but the Q&A here is pretty awesome.

Here are some pictures from the arch.

NS4CWN

It’s day one at the summit, and we’re at the ‘pre-summit’ summit, I guess that would be the PNS4CWN, that is at the local convention center. We’ve gotten a little bit of sleep over at the Quality Inn, and figured out where most things are. Apparently, the canadians didn’t find the Inn to their liking and have moved to the ‘higher quality’ sheraton.

Waffles

It’s very very windy in St Charles tonight. Luckily, there are waffles.

If a node falls in a forest, does it send a beacon?

Node Dexter and Node Aeris came down this week. Aeris apparently took a nose dive in one of our recent windstorms and took a chunk out of the roof. Bad. The company hosting Dexter was sold and the new owners are not interested in wireless networking. These two nodes coming down has removed our gasworks coverage and effectively killed the LakeUnionNetwork. For those of you on the East side of the lake that wanted to link to Capitol Hill, you’re out of luck for now. For those of you on the west side, drop me a line, if your location is good and your roof is stable, I’ve got some gear. Too much really.

There is of course, more bad news, in fact, probably the worst news we’ve had; Atoys was denied it’s LPFM translator license renewal by the FCC, and is vacating the UPN Tower. This means that NodeAtoys is coming down. Yes, we raised funds, bought gear, paid a climber, ended up in the news because of it, and just a few months later, it is all coming down. Sorry folks, it was a good deal while we had it, and I only hope some of you got some packets through.

All of this may seem a bit demoralizing, and really, it is, but on the bright side, I hear HackNight has been pretty busy over the past few months, and people are engaged and doing interesting things.

Strangely enough, the network has come completely apart before, and even though things looked bleak, it came back stronger. I’m optimistic about the future of the project, and I know good things are just around the corner. Sometimes it has to get worse before it gets better.

As Rob has noted on his blog, Pyramid Linux 1.0b1 is now available for download. For those of you who can’t download, you can purchase a kit preloaded with the latest, tastiest bits or show up at HackNight and get your PXE boot on.

Due to popular demand, we also present to you, the Pyramid Linux Wiki, your one stop shop for support and information on Pyramid Linux and Metrix Networking Kits.

changes

Perhaps you’ve noticed things have changed a little around here. I’ve updated the theme to use a modified K2 and display my Flickr photos in falbum.

I’m still keeping my Gallery around , but I’ve been finding Flickr more and more useful lately. If you know of a good wordpress-gallery plugin, let me know.

Go to MO

Well, I’ve got my ticket for The National Summit for Community Wireless Networks and I even picked up a walking guide off Amazon.

Did you know that there is a tram that goes to the top of the arch?

If you know of something to do in the St. Louis / St. Charles area, let me know.
