Aaron Baer wrote an Open Letter to the PTP, and it’s caused quite a stir. Good reading.

For the past couple of days, I’ve been in the San Diego SuperComputer Center, talking to folks at the CAIDA COMMONS Workshop. It’s hard for me to accurately describe here what happened there, or what will come of it, but I did get some pictures, and there is a reading list. The one line irc summary would probably be something like.
“old Internet #0, making new Internet #1″
I’ll give a rambling talk about it at next week’s hacknight I’m sure. It’s one of those things that could turn into a really big deal ™

Michael Mee of SocalFreeNet was also in attendance, so a bunch of us got together and climbed up on the Pink Palace roof. Here is a shot of Sascha, Ralf, Michael and Dana up on the roof. A definite highlight of the event. The Canadian Michael was there too, but he didn’t make it out for the climb. His adventures were a bit more… gastric.
| Well, I’ve got my ticket for The National Summit for Community Wireless Networks and I even picked up a walking guide off Amazon.
Did you know that there is a tram that goes to the top of the arch? If you know of something to do in the St. Louis / St. Charles area, let me know. |
Wireless Networks for the Developing World (US Mirror) was released this morning. The printing has all been sorted out, and you can download or order your dead tree version now.
BTW, it’s 6:35AM, and BoingBoing has already picked up the story.
Here’s the Press Release:
It looks like I’m taking another trip to flatland. This time it’s St. Charles, MO for the National Summit for Community Wireless Networks, a shindig thrown by our pals at Champaign Urbana Community Wireless Network, Free Press, and the Mid-Rivers Community Wireless Network.
Much like the FreeNetworks Summits, the NS4CWN2006 is a chance for Community Wireless geeks to get together and have a few beers, but instead of just exchanging hardware trickery and getting into the nitty gritty of network topologies, it’s a mixer of geeks, policy makers, and municipal planners. Want to get face to face with the FCC or find out what your state and local government is doing to cater to the telco’s latest demands? This looks like the place to do it.
I didn’t make it to their first summit back in 2004, but from everything I heard happened, there’s no way I’m missing it this time!

Qwest’s new Acceptable Use Policy for it’s DSL system is Un-Acceptable Policy.
If you are a Qwest DSL customer, even through a third party ISP, Qwest is setting the rules on what happens on their wire. Take a gander and see what the effects of Brand X really look like.
Sascha Meinrath has a writeup and a copy of the agreement here.

At 16:29 (CST) today, RW Royal Jr. Incident Commander of the JIC (Joint Information Committee) has denied Austin Airwaves the ability to run the emergency low power FM radio station inside of the dome. This is contrary to the FCC licenses that have been issued to Austin Airwaves. However RW Royal Jr is a member of the JIC. He has decided to deny the request. When they asked why they were being turned down, they were told that the Astrodome could not provide them with electricity. When the Austin Airwaves team offered to run on battery backup, they were still denied.
